review 1: Hat mir ausgesprochen gut gefallen. Der Autor versteht es gut die Stimmung in den, der Moderne verschriebenen Kreisen, dem Leser näher zu bringen. Man spürt die Spannung die herrscht, die Unsicherheit auf der Suche nach neuen, der Zeit entsprechenden Ausdrucks- und Lebensformen. Alles ist in Bewegung, keiner weiss wohin die Gesellschaft hin steuert, nur wenige sehen die dunklen Wolken, welche am Horizont auftauchen, manche erahnen sie, wollen, können sie aber nicht wirklich wahrnehmen. Mehr ein Gemälde als ein Buch.
review 2: I think this is one of those books that you will either love very much or not like at all. The book goes month-by-month through 1913 and discusses the lives of many of the most influential cultural figures of Europe as well as sharing... more events like who was born or key events that gave the year perspective. I am fairly familiar with most of the cultural figures, but found that the stories about them were just not so interesting to me and I just couldn't get into their lives. It seems most of them were quite crazy or led such abnormal lives that rather than learn more about them, I was turned off. In spite of this, I can see where a very informed person might like the details that are covered. I just never could get involved here. less
