review 1: CATEGORY: REQUIREDMarcelo in the Real World is about Marcelo Sandoval, a teen with an autism-like condition who can hear music that no one else can hear. Though he doesn’t process emotions and human interactions like most people, he has learned to get along well at his specialized school and within his family. He listens to his music and focus on religion, his special interest. However, Marcelo’s father, a high-powered attorney, thinks Marcelo needs to learn what the real world is about. He makes Marcelo spend the summer working in his law office. In the “real world,” Marcelo learns about love, deceit, and power. He learns that people are not always who they appear to be. What was most interesting to me in this book was the positive portrayal of religion. Marcelo i... mores religious and his thoughts about religion inform his everyday decisions. Since many YA books avoid religion, it was interesting to see how Marcelo and his rabbi friend were portrayed positively without appearing fanatical. I really liked this book. Stork does a brilliant job of writing Marcelo’s voice and helping the reader understand what’s going on inside his head. I would recommend this book for ages 14-18.
review 2: REQUIREDMarcelo hears music in his head. All the time. This music narrates and accompanies his life, but prevents him from being socially normal with an Autism-like diagnosis. His father, a prominent lawyer, requires him to work at his office for the summer instead of at the horse farm Marcelo loves. While working at the law firm's mail room, Marcelo meets Jasmine, a beautiful girl and Wendell, the conniving son of his father's partner. During the summer Marcelo is also exposed to other harsh realities of the world he has yet to understand. I liked this book and think it paints the picture of an interesting disability really well. less
