review 1: I really enjoyed Stork's Marcello in the Real World and thought I would give another of his books a try. I was not disappointed. Although the premise is pretty sad, the journey the characters take is gripping and interesting. DJ is battling cancer, and Pancho just lost his family. They cross path's in an orphanage, and that is where the story begins. Together, this unlikely pair go through a last chemo trial for DJ, and a search for the man who was with Pancho's sister when she died. Stork has a beautiful way of leading the reader through his stories, and he masterfully brings his characters to life. I really felt like I could picture both DJ and Pancho as I read. I recommend this book to all readers, not just teen readers.
review 2: A beautifully writt
... moreen story about two misfit boys in an orphanage. The meaning of life and reasons to live are the main themes of this novel. Character dynamics makes this story especially intriguing - while one boy is sick and fights for his life, the other refuses to believe living is worthwhile. There is a bit of a morbid theme in this book, but the message is somewhat optimistic, and relevant to every person. As a person who often ponders on life and death, I found this book to be especially enjoyable, as my previous opinions changed while the characters’ evolved. less
