review 1: This was such a fun book to read, about a fantasy everyone must have had in some sense or another, about imagining things that come true, somehow, and all the good, bad and complicated things that come out of that. I enjoyed the characters, the description of the church rituals, the dialogue, etc. I thought the best character was Cornelius and I loved that Norman's sister is called "Jim" I have such a thing about girls with boys names.
review 2: Definitely five stars for originality of style, writing, and author's ability to build a sense of anticipation. A big hit when it was published in 1939, it holds up well today. The main character, Norman, is a very real, very flawed fellow who draws sympathy and frustration equally from the reader (as well as his family
... more and friends). I think this contributes to the 'what in the world will happen next?' feeling I had while reading. I subtracted a star for the meandering middle where more character development occurs but plot suffers a bit. Lots of interesting themes here: creation via creativity; religious life of a town; quality of music; morality and responsibility. (I apologize for the vagueness, I just don't want to give anything away!) Overall, this was a gem and a refreshingly original surprise. less
