review 1: One might think that a graphic novel, exploring the history and music of the Carter family a strange way to tell their story. But the illustrations and language make it a very meaningful, and intimate way to tell the story of their times, lives, and music. Some of their songs get their own chapter headings. One gets the feeling of the struggles in A.P. Carter's life, both professionally and personally. He initially was the crucial person in the story of the Carter family. There is a c.d of some of their songs included. One can listen and read at the same time! I loved this way of telling the story of this first family of country music.
review 2: The graphic novel format was an interesting approach to telling the story of A.P., Sara and Maybelle Carter.
... moreWhile I learned a lot about their history and got a sense of their personalities and arc of success, it still felt a bit dry. A lot of effort went into figuring out how to express their "hillbilly" form of speech in the panels, but I found that sort of wearing. If you're interested in the Carter Family or in interesting applications of the graphic form, then by all means take a look at the book. If not, I'd say you can pass it by. less

It's a good story, and I'm interested in the Carters, but the writing is pretty dismally plain.
