review 1: The premise is so fascinating that it, to some extent, overcomes the book's hackneyed story. The first part of the book, before the Christians really take over, is pretty dreadful, with characters (especially a devastatingly handsome gay child of Indian immigrants) spouting off extended riffs on the Christian theocrats plotting to take over the U.S. This book has been compared to The Plot Against America, which is much, much better written, and It Can't Happen Here, which was one of Sinclair Lewis' lesser efforts. But I have to admit, the second half of the story, as the Christianists take over and the hero goes to reeducation camp, at least partially redeems the novel. And the basic point, that the Christian right in this nation bears uncomfortable similarities to the Ira... morenian Mullahs, is one that is true.
review 2: I guess the subtitle is operative ... "It could happen here ..."Only thing missing was how the corporate world would respond to such a thing. Or, perhaps it wasn't missing, and the corporations, being fascist in their political model, found the fascism of a Christian nation quite handy. 11 Oct 2014: one thing the author missed was having a drunken Palin family brawl during the White House easter egg roll. less
