review 1: This is a fantastic summary of scientific research in Antarctica. I have always wanted to go there, and I really enjoyed learning more details about the people and places. It is well-written (no jargon here!) and informative. The writer is clearly familiar with her material, having traveled to the various research stations to meet with the scientists and learn about their projects many times. I also liked that she included personal experiences, so it was not too dry.
review 2: Walker is a scientist and author of three other books, as well as a frequent contributor to science magazines and journals. Walker combines history, science and a look at what it is like for the scientists who live at Antarctica doing research. She delves into the brave journeys of Shackl
... moreeton and Scott, and the contribution they made to the exploration of Antarctica. She covers the lonely beauty of the "aurora australis", or southern lights; the experience of living in the coldest place on earth and in total darkness for months on end; the majesty of the glaciers and the playfulness of penguins. less
