review 1: This is a must read. At first I was not being pulled into the book. I wasn't relating to the characters but I was finding the friendship between the two something that I just wanted to keep reading about and then by mid way, Gail had pulled me into her life and the friendship between her and Caroline. Her feelings about the death of her friend hit me in a way that no other book so far has and I was able to relate to every feeling and thought she had.
review 2: Memoir is a genre that rarely interests me unless it rises to the level of Nabakov’s “Speak Memory.” Caldwell purports in this book to compose a memoir to her friendship with the late Caroline Knapp. Knapp herself was a best-selling memoirist with a book on drinking “Drinking: a Love Story” and ... moreanother on dogs “Pack of Two.” Disclosure: I haven’t read either of these, but now I might. One gets the sense that Caldwell is hi-jacking her friend’s topics, as in “Lets Take the Long Way Home”, she too focuses on her problem with alcoholism and her bond with her dog, all of which she insists predates her relationship with Knapp. There’s a film of competition over her writing; rivalry with a friend who can no longer retaliate. When she claims that Knapp “needed” the friendship more, one is taken aback at the outright egoism of such a statement. Her disclosures on her own struggles seem self-congratulatory and her attitude towards Knapp is frequently condescending. less
