review 1: This book is a hard one for me to rate. It's honest, it's heartfelt, it's fairly well written. But it's about two characters that I could not identify with at all. I grasped a feeling about the quality of the relationship between Caroline and Gail better than I could the women themselves. It was hard for me to get into their stories because I was never a smoker, nor an alcoholic and those habits make up a lot of the nature of the two. Even more so I am not at all a lover of dogs and I'm sure a reader enmeshed in those worlds would be more sympathetic to the writer.
review 2: "I had a friend and we shared everything, and then she died and so we shared that too."So begins this Caldwell memoir about a life-altering friendship whose portrayal here shows us everythi
... moreng that matters in life--and death. Two private and self-reliant women met through their dogs, and bonded through long walks and their love of books. Then after several years of attachment, the friend was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. In the death of her friend, Caldwell celebrates both their lives in this inspirational tale."My life had made so much sense alongside hers: For years we had played the easy, daily game of catch that intimate connection implies. One ball, two gloves, equal joy in the throw and the return. Now I was in the field without her: one glove, no game. Grief is what tells you who you are alone."Writing about life, loss, and grief does not get better than that! less
