review 1: This book was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the tech, the excitement, and the characters. This book was extended from a well-liked short story, and I must say I am glad I never read the original story. As the novel starts out, I didn't know quite what was going on. And I liked the mystery of it. When things became clear, about a third of the way in, I was hooked. There are several twists that I didn't see coming; however, the ending is not one of those. I knew from a mile away how things were going to tidy up and where the dust would lie. That said, I recommend this book if you like characters such as a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking, crass monkey who's also a WWII flying ace.
review 2: Entertaining enough, but I never really saw the point of the alternate history sett
... moreing and its vision of 2058 was disappointingly 2012 (MMORPGs? SincPads? Please...). The short story that Powell originally wrote with this title (which is included at the end of the book with a commentary by he author) is, however, quite wonderful - a perfect example of 'less is more'. Buy this book and just read that, and you won't be disappointed. less
