review 1: There is a particular feeling of being in love and being in pain because of it -- and being a firefighter, that is how this story makes me feel. I am so terribly in love with it, and it is only a handful of pages long. There are so many little details, from the longer memory of the fire chief to the donning of proximity suits, to details about fire behavior that pulled me in to the story in ways I hadn't expected. There was some research done here, for sure. There were a few niggling inconsistencies that bothered me; the rapid promotion (maybe it's different Down Under, but city promotions are by exam/interview), and more importantly the firefighter chosen for the super-hazardous task was an orphan with no family so that he wouldn't be leaving anyone behind. But as a firefigh... moreter, even without blood relations you always have family.People have complained about the lack of character development, but to me the protagonist seemed like a firefighter everyman in a way. I don't know if this was the intent or not. Maybe that doesn't matter. But there were things that happened in the story that I know every guy I know would have reacted about the same way.
review 2: There's something about the short story format than lends itself to being either frighteningly dull or exceptionally brilliant. It's a short sharp taste as opposed to a meal or degustation and so I often find that a short story will either do nothing for me, or I will enjoy it immensely. This one tastes absolutely delicious. Always been a fan of dragon-lore but of course it can easily be mishandled or over cliched. It wasn't.I wish it existed in hard copy, I'd get it onto my real life bookshelf rather quickly. less

Nicely done urban fantasy short story with dragon lore and a surprising ending.

Just a story, but I liked it well enough. Fire and dragons.
