review 1: A very enlightening and important book describing the trials and tribulations of the 'professionals' tasked with developing the DSM-5, as written by a critical outsider. Some great history on the development of the previous iterations, but predominantly focused on the authors monitoring of the progress of the DSM-5 up until publication in early 2013. A fantastic read, one which will not only make you question your beliefs about psychiatric nosology, but about the whole enterprise of classifying suffering as an illness. A must read for anyone working in mental health (particularly psychiatry), but I think that anyone with a passing interest in mental health issues would find this book a real eye opener.
review 2: Expose of the DSM and the people who create th
... moreis bible of the psychicatric profession. There is a historical overview of the creation of the DSM. This is an unbeliveable twist that people really need to get a handle on because it is the expanation what mental illness really is. I'll tell you that it is a physiological pathological disease. All the other stuff which constitutes mental illness is pain caused by social and economic problems that people have yet to deal with. Highly recommended. less

A well researched account of the formulation of the DSM 5 and it's deeply flawed foundations.

Pretty disturbing read. Makes me seriously consider my own diagnosis and meds.
