review 1: To me, a memoir is complete only if the author provides some reflection on the value of his experience. Sadly, the author relates only endless stories of his screw-ups and his parents' (loving?) wrangling. The readers hears of some crushes, some college affairs, but nothing of the relationship with the woman who became his wife. (I know he has a wife only because he refers once to having one.) How did he graduate from Oberlin? And how did he actually become an author? Important parts of his story were left out.
review 2: I had never read any Gary Shteyngart books before, and this was a great introduction to his writing. I know he has written novels before, but this memoir was very funny and very well done. I I would have given it four and a half stars if w
... moree could give half-star ratings. It was really a terrific read. he manages to be self deprecating, biting, clever, withering, subtle, hysterical, emotional, and insightful all at once. That's a rare ability in a writer. less

A kvetching memoir. The immigrant child in the modern world is a new angle. But v. Kvetching!

Hilarious. One of the funniest books I've read. And it's sincere.
