review 1: I purchased this book as research for a novel I'm writing involving the Minoan culture. I learned very quickly that this book is hardly dense with relevant facts or worthwhile information, but is instead akin to listening to a senile grandparent ramble about a past vacation he'd taken to the Greek isles. Some mildly interesting anecdotes inside, surely, but otherwise riddled with hyperbole and questionable history.
review 2: I still haven't made up my mind about this book. I found parts of it very interesting and possible, if not probable whereas other parts seemed entirely conjured. Menzies' argument is basically that the Minoan civilization (destroyed by a volcanic eruption) was the basis for the myth of Atlantis. Menzies contends that the Minoan's dominance
... morewas due to a strong naval fleet engaged in a massive trading network throughout the Mediterranean Sea and beyond.Menzies seems to suggest that their trading network centered on the copper and tin needed to make bronze. He contends that the Minoans travelled to Great Britain to mine the materials. The trip to Great Britain seems reasonable as they could have docked often to gather supplies. I didn't find the theory that the Minoans reached America as compelling. I'll admit, my mind wandered a bit as he discussed longitude and latitude and their importance in sailing so I may have missed something important. It seems as thought, there would be more physical evidence if the Minoans were to gave established mines near the Great Lakes. This is definitely an interesting book and suggests an alternative to most modern works about the Minoans. less

Interesting but looses credibility in claiming Lake Superior as the source of Bronze Age copper.

I think it's well written and well researched, but it still feels like a stretch to me.
