review 1: Fearless. I found myself absolutely stunned on multiple occasions. This was an absolute honor to read. Saunders grounds his wild imagination in very real worlds, which is exactly what makes it so effective. Readers are horrified, but always convinced. Many times while reading ToD, I thought about how certain sentences were exactly the type of sentences that I've seen get shot down in workshop a thousand times. This interests me. I think I'll have to return to this review.
review 2: As an author, I sometimes encounter books that are so good, I'm both immensely jealous and thrilled to have had the chance to read them at the same time. Tenth of December, which my wife recommended I read, was spectacular. Saunders manages with style and grace to completely immerse ... moreyou in the stories of losers, madmen, murderers, and other people for whom life has never quite measured up to expectations. Using style and letting context and suggestion fill in a lot of the details, he makes these people sympathetic. You feel for them, feel their frustration that things have somehow spiraled out of their control, feel their disappointment with their lives and the paths they've taken. His characters feel real, because they feel broken, and most people are broken. The small thread of near-future science-fiction running through most of the stories speaks of a world not very far away, and shows some of its possible detriments, without ever coming off as conservative or anti-progress. There is just a tremendous amount of world-building done between the lines in these stories. I found them thoroughly engrossing. less
