review 1: I actually listened to this as an audiobook, and of my friends who've read or listened to this, the ones who've read it tend to like it better, or even love it. The audiobook is read by George Saunders himself. I couldn't give this a five, though I wanted to, because it seems its supposed to be the best recent book of short stories…but I found its malevolent creepiness repetitive and tiring.
review 2: Cynical jade-sharp realism is the best ingredient here. Too bad that voice plays out again, and again, in most other characters, unless intended. If intended, received with laughs in the middle of the night; other times, too familiar. The first story in the sequence makes the rest feel like adolescent, less interesting friends, however likable. Still, it was... more a blaze of a read and hugely recommended. less
