review 1: This book was more interesting than the first book of the series, The Time Baroness, because it actually had a plot that moved the story along. The popular artist Elinah Johnston, known as Evie, goes back in time to 1853 New York, accompanied by Cassandra Reilly, the time traveler of The Time Baroness. Evie stated purpose is to meet her ancestors there. She turns out to be descended from Benjamin Johnston, the musician Cassandra had fallen in love with on her trip to 1820 England in The Time Baroness. Evie also has another purpose in mind which she doesn't share with Cassie. She comes across as a willful, spoiled brat at first. It turns out that Evie's ancestors are abolitionists active in the Underground Railroad. The story is fairly fast paced; each chapter begins w... moreith a narrative by a runaway slave named Caleb Stone, whom Evie and Cassie meet and get to know. They also get involved with the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad.
review 2: Cassandra is a scientist, an author and a talented pianist. With her many talents, she is about to embark on another adventure, but not in her time. She's going to enter a portal that will transport her back to the year 1853. She's a time traveller and this is not the first time that she has gone back to the 1800s. She wrote about her first experience and her book was well received. Now, a famous artist, Evie Johnston, is paying her way to use the portal and take Cassandra with her. The two women are on an adventure of a lifetime as they connect with the Underground Railroad in New York City and have to join the escaped slaves in a run for their lives. There's romance in the story, too. This is a thrilling book to read, a real page-turner. Georgina Young-Ellis is a master of description. Her familiarity with the world of drama and theatre is evident in her clear depiction of scenery, costume and even food. A real pleasure to read. Well done! Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford, the award-winning author of "The Whistling Bishop".Perhaps we are all time travellers, space travellers, alternate reality travellers. Every time we open a book, we're transformed to another time and place and, if the book is good, we become a part of the story's mosaic. This was definitely the case in Georgina's book. I enjoyed my time-travelling experience as I journeyed through her story. less
