review 1: Rating this book is really difficult as it's really easy to critique. Is it a challenging book that will expand your horizons and make you question your existing values or beliefs? No. It's cliched, predictable, shallow, twee and completely unbelievable characters. Did I enjoy it? Did I look forward to reading it? Yes and yes. Despite all the criticisms that CSM be raised it is a 'cosy mug of hot chocolate on a cold rainy day sort of book' that can be read in one sitting.
review 2: Exactly as you'd expect. Gentle, humorous, no real baddie. Predictable all through but a warm read for it. I did feel that it was a rehash of his autobiographies just in a fictional setting, though I did laugh a few times at what the kids say, can't help it. Too much repetition. Almo... morest an anti-thesis to The Casual Vacancy, where one event (I.e. the arrival of a new Head in this case) changes the lives of everyone in the village, but in this case for the better. less
