review 1: Should really be three and a half stars.There are a lot of good things in this book. The world and the diverse cast are some of them. I was excited when I started it and kept going on at a nice pace, but I eventually just started to feel bogged down, and it was a real struggle to finish. I can't quite put my finger on why, though. It might be just how much is covered in this book, years of growing up and world events take place within this one novel. I felt like I was a skipping stone, catching the main events but skimming over the everyday. I've read novels that spend too much on the day-to-day, so I know that's not ideal, but this book seemed to go too far in the other direction. I spent over six hundred pages reading about these characters, and I still don't feel that e... moremotionally invested in them; and that makes me feel a little sad. I do want to read the rest of the series, to find out what happens and to learn more about the world they live in, but it's going to take a while for me to work up sufficient enthusiasm to read the next one.
review 2: So glad that my fiancee picked this one out for me a few weeks ago. It was a bit of a slow start, but once I started to learn more about the world, I found myself completely sucked in. Glenda Larke really has a way of making you care about her characters, even when they have views you don't like and methods you don't agree with. The magic and culture are both very intriguing as well. Not to mention that once you get going, the action never stops. Definitely a surprise five stars from me. less
