review 1: This book is about a young boy who just moved to a new house and away from his friends. He looks out the window and sees a golden lion that said he would grant the young boy ten wishes. As they read along, students can keep track and count all of the different wishes in order. It would be perfect for young students learning to count. In the end, Willoughby & The Lion teaches the value of friendship.
review 2: Willoughby and the Lion is written and illustrated by Greg Foley. This book is about a child who has recently moved to a new house. He is unhappy with his new house and then he finds a giant golden lion in the backyard. This book teaches a valuable lesson about friendship. This books audience would be just about anybody. I think it lends itself to reading
... morealoud, although you should expect to tear up while reading. I think this book could really be used across all of the elementary school grades, but might seem juvenile to students any older. I may use this book in my classroom to discuss needs and wants. I may also use this book to discuss things that are really important to us. *A note about my rating this book 4 stars. I initially was going to give this book 5 stars, but when I read it to my daughter, she wasn't sure about the ending. She wondered why the lion went away if the boy wished for a friend. She thought that if they were friends that they should stay together. I thought that raised an interesting point about the different ways adults and children view friendship. I, as an adult, have many close friends that I don't get to see as often as I'd like because of work, family, school, life. When we do get together it's as if no time has passed and we're just as close as ever. However, in my daughter's mind, if she doesn't see her friends on a regular basis, she feels she loses some of the closeness with that person. less
