review 1: Mortenson's actions give insights into how personal actions can fight terrorism by confronting a foreign policy dilemma. This book describes the efforts of Mortenson's team to establish schools in the northeast corner of Afghanistan. Interrupted briefly by a major earthquake, the effort continues to barnstorm all over the Taliban territory, affecting US military strategy be emphasizing key points of a "hearts and minds" strategy.Of all the horrible problems in Afghanistan, the major success story can be said to be education, facilitated by Mortenson's extremely risky forays into the country side. Especially noteworthy are his efforts on behalf of Afghan girls and women.Unfortunately, the glory of Mortenson's efforts was recently dimmed by revelations that not all of the st... moreories related in his books were totally factual, with some bending of the facts to fit the arc of making a good story. Still, there are many lessons to be learned here in how to change the world for the better.
review 2: Great follow up to Three Cups of Tea. The Afghan people sound like a resilient people given their history over the past half-century. Greg's team are incredibly devoted to their mission and the local leaders are passionate about education. I admire the courage of local governments, teachers, and students who are faced with a very real and life threatening risk in pursuing education for girls. As well, this book helped me to understand better why western countries have had a military presence in Afghanistan. I've learned a lot about the middle east thanks to his book. less
