review 1: I love this story due to its flawless illustrations. They are beautifully textured and embedded with cultural significance. The Korphe children wear unique garments that are wonderfully depicted through the use of cloth like illustrations. The story the author tells is his own. This adds a certain depth and meaning because he experienced the wonderful events that took place. I love how there is a Korphe scrapbook at the end of the book. There are pictures of the real children in Pakistan and captions that fill in details from the story. For the reader this is a wonderful way to “visit” another country through the picture walk. This book has many subjects that it touches upon; geography, social studies and reading.
review 2: Beautiful illustrations! Primary
... morestudents will connect to this story as it is told by the point of view of a group of children. The illustrations are strikingly beautiful. They are photographs of collages made of actual fabric from Pakistan where the story takes place. An artist note is included at the end telling readers how the colors of the region inspired her to create these illustrations. The tone of this story is simple and yet heartwarming. Listen to the Wind is a children’s book that tells the same story as Three Cups of Tea, a book written for adults. In this story a man called Dr. Greg, in kindness helps build a school in a Pakistani village. Students can develop an understanding of the importance of school and education in communities all around the world. This book can be used to compare students’ community with that of a rural Pakistani village. A lesson on how giving and providing for others can make a great difference it is obvious in this story. Also a lesson on getting together as a community and cooperating in order to help others is valuable for children to learn. At the end of the book there is a collection of actual photographs showing the true life story of Dr. Greg and the village of Korphe. A culminating project can be done using the artistic notes at the end of the story in which students use this art format to create their own story. less
