review 1: An entertaining read. I liked the mixture of humour, obsceneness, and tragedy. I appreciated the author's comedic description of how it feels to be an outsider in Iceland. I feel that the sign of strong character description and development is when a reader is able to really root for the bad guy. I found that while reading this book. The novelty of the character being a hitman wore off after awhile, but my interest in his personal growth did not.
review 2: This book started really good, with a very interesting character, interesting story. A hitman running from the law, and from his own people, and he has a very colorful past full of colorful stories.He accidentally ends up in Iceland, which is as foreign of a country to him as it could get, impersonating a p... moreriest. It was really humorous, up to when people start realizing that he's not who he says. And that's when the book starts changing.While his interesting stories continue to pepper the book, his spiritual cleansing, detoxifying, whatever it is that happens to him, begins. And I just found it boring and tedious. That's without adding that it was very disturbing process that makes me fear very religious people.The ending was a bit rushed, with suddenly new characters that may have mattered earlier in the book but didn't matter in the last 2 pages. And it was very vague...what really happens to Tommy/Tod/Toxic/Tomo? less
