review 1: "What Cats Are Made Of" by Hanoch Piven should actually be two separate books-one with the beautiful whimsical illustrations and the other with the text. Unfortunately, the two parts do not go together at all. The text is an interesting mix of the characteristics of cats and detailed descriptions of various breeds. This text deserves realistic images of the cat breeds. The illustrations are cute, funny and delightful, but they do not match the text and the combination leaves the reader wanting to find a cat identification book so they can see the actual cats described. The beautiful illustrations deserve a whimiscal text, perhaps a long rambling poem. Alone each part would deserve a 4 star rating, but together I give it only a 2.
review 2: I'm glad I work
... morein a library and get to see delightful picture books like this come in, as I would have no exposure to them otherwise. This one features hilarious mixed-media collages of different breeds of cats, along with brief facts about the history of the breed and felines in general. (My favorite? The anemic-looking, hairless Sphinx clutching two hot water bottles and shivering.) This one's sure to be a hit with cat lovers and quirky art fans of all ages. less
