review 1: This novel, originally written in 1946, really shows how the normal Germans coped in the face of the Nazi delerium. There are a lot of characters, and the novel does an excellent job of showing us the deeply paranoid society, and those hopelessly unable to voice contradictory opinion. The most heartbreaking part of the story, is its characters do not make a difference towards stopping the Nazis, however they are able to salvage their goodness in their small acts of rebellion.
review 2: Well, that was horrible. In a good way xDThe beginning was slow. The characters are a little weird and you'd sooner think of them as teenagers than 5o years old people. I think it's the way they talk which is a little weird. The last fourth of the book is the most powerful and
... moreemotional. It broke me. I kept hoping they'll get away and survive. It was real and it showed that period the best. It also angered me. The only thing that can put me off watching/reading something is injustice. It makes me so angry and Gestapo was full of that shit. It angered me how they destroyed completely innocent people and made them suffer. I had to put the book away a few times. What also made me sad was how little effect their whole work against Hitler made. It was heart-breaking.I do suggest this and I do suggest sticking through the slower parts. less
