review 1: Emotionally, this is as hard to read as 1984, The Sunset Song Trilogy and Les Miserables. However it is most like the latter, due to the steel cord of hope running through it. Described as the greatest Nazi resistance novel ever written, I suspect this could be true. Based on a true story and written in Berlin in 1947 this is not a gratuitously indulgent novel about Nazi Germany. It's like an eye witness account. Terse, economical and poetic, even in translation, this gripping book is acutely and sensitively observed. Almost seventy years old, and again, in translation, it is fresh, immediate and demands to be read.
review 2: I know people love this book. The author's story I think is more compelling than the book and someone should write about that and the exp
... moreerience of being in an insane asylum during Hitler's reign. As for Everyman...I can't think of many books that tell the story of what it was like during Hitler's reign to actually live in Germany, Berlin no less and the macro perspective is haunting and relevant today. However, I struggled to get into the book and it wasn't until the last third that I found myself I struggled with the structure and shifts of point of view. I wanted to stay with the those who are seemingly the central characters and found that ancillary characters that I wasn't invested in took center stage. Their stories certainly add to the flavor of living under the Nazi regime and I found the point of view of the Nazi officers fascinating, but my interested waxed and wained throughout the story and I was left feeling rather ambivalent about the book over all. It's the last third of the book when the story clicked in for me. I just wish it had much earlier in the book. less
