review 1: Keilson tells an unforgettable story of fear. Expertly translated by Damion Searles, the novel transports the reader into the story of a young couple secretly housing an older, Jewish gentleman during the Second World War. It is told anachronistically, opening with an uncomfortable scene just after the death of Nico, the Jewish gentleman. The situation is occasionally comical in a haunting manor. The inhumane oppression during the period stirs emotions new to the characters, and the way in which Keilson illustrates the character's awareness of these new cognitions is chilling and beautiful.
review 2: Picked this up off the new releases shelf a couple years ago (it had just been translated). Read it in two days, then took quite a bit of willpower not to turn ba
... moreck to the beginning and read it again. The whole book feels like it's written in utter shock and terror, but with a sense of reality. It can be a bit slow, but very short, so as to make the reader feel as if they should keep going. This is not a happy book. It should not be read on beaches. It will not make you smile uncontrollably or give you warm fuzzies. But it has quickly become one of my all time favorites, and it is definitely worth the read. less
