review 1: I'll Comment on this one later. Ok I read "Full Fathom Five" and thought it was an excellent novella so I thought I'd try one of "Harrison Drake's" full length novels because I like to read crime novels by Canadian authors and even better if set in Canada. As I like to read series in order I started with the first in the series after the novellas. I really wanted to like this book especially because of the locale in which it is set as I'm somewhat familiar with most of those small municipalities in Ontario but I'm afraid I came away with very mixed feelings about this book. Thankfully my Kindle edition didn't come fully equipped with all the usual Kindle formatting problems so, unfortunately, I can't blame that for my disappointment in this book. One of the problems is the... more two major plot lines that really don't have anything to do with each other and are never really tied together satisfactorily. I've read many mysteries with more than one major plot line but the authors have always managed to tie all the plot and sub plot lines together in the conclusion, or if they haven't and haven't indicated that one of these plots is the lead into the next book in the series, I'll downrate that book severally. There goes a couple of stars for this book right away! I think this would have been much better as two separate books with each of the stories fleshed out, better developed and given solider, more satisfactory and probably more spectacular endings. Now, personally, I didn't like Kara at all and I didn't like Lincoln as much as I did in the 1st novella so it's difficult to give a book a high rating when you don't really like the protagonists very much. I'll probably give the next book in this series a look if I can get free or at a reasonable price (like $0.99 or less!) but it's not high on my "to read list"
review 2: Lincoln Munroe is a detective with the police force in Ontario. He and his partner Kara are working a serial murder case. Munroe starts having dreams about a skull in a shallow grave in the woods. The area is vagely familiar to him but he can not remember why. There is a lot of information about Monroe's personal life which makes the book better. A Dream of Death is well written and comes together nicley at the end. less
