review 1: You don't have to be Yankee fan to enjoy this book but it helps. Yogi Berra and Ron Guidry, two ex-Yankee baseball players, developed a friendship at Spring Training that has spanned decades. Although they are of different generations they are bound by their love of the game and Yankee history. Yogi was a Yankee manager when I was a child and Guidry was a star pitcher when I was in my teens. As a lifelong Yankee fan I enjoyed hearing behind the scenes recounting of events in Yankee history both on and off the field. Yes this is a story about baseball but it is also the story of two men who have genuine respect and love for each other approaching that of a father and son.
review 2: It's easy to be jaded regarding the pro athletes of today. their contracts, attit... moreudes motivation and most of all, their salaries have taken the passion I once had for sports and have driven me to do other things-like read books.....In the 60's the New York Yankees were the equivalent of rocks stars. Mantle, Maris, Whitey Ford and a goofy non-athletic blue collar catcher named Yogi Berra. This read centers on the relationship between Berra and another younger former Yank Ron Guidry. It is a tale of friendship, respect, love of the game certain to warm even the most cynical of sports-weary hearts. You will also get insight into Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Nick Swisher and their respect and admiration for one of the game's greatest and humble gentlemen.
