review 1: WARNING: If you ONLY enjoy reading stories that end with picket fences, kitty cats and rainbows, then you should skip these!!! Otherwise, BUCKLE UP, BUTTERCUP! Because this is ONE HECK of a ride! This series of books was an ASTOUNDING surprise for me. I am reviewing all of them as one, because I CAN'T FATHOM why anyone would NOT read them ALL. Although the writing style is slightly different in the first one, one book is just as good as the other. I found them to be gripping to the point of VISCERAL. I simply couldn't put them down, and TORE through all 4 books in about 2 days. They are hard-driving, yet sweet, they are tough, yet beautiful.. and they are MY FAVORITE THING THAT I HAVE EVER READ!!!I loved the flawed characters, who were constantly fighting both intern... moreal and external wars. This story has it ALL: BAD@$$ female lead character, love of family, love of friends, romantic love (thankfully the romance was good, but not overdone), CONSTANT action, a front-row seat for a war of good vs evil, and a breathtaking fantasy landscape. It is sprinkled with some good reminders about life in general, too. For the first time in my life (40+ years), I cried at the end of a book. At the same time, for the first time in my life, I wanted to IMMEDIATELY read a series of books again! I haven't re-read them yet. But plan to do so. And I plan to read EVERYTHING that H.D. Gordon EVER writes.
review 2: I had my doubts about this series. For me, Blood Warrior was slow to start but the plot and unique spread of characters caught my interest. Half Black Soul has me invested though. From the minute I read the blurb, I knew I was going to enjoy it even more than Blood Warrior. A journey to break someone who is supposed to be dead out of an impenetrable prison. Two people, one car and a buttload of sexual tension. Death, sword fights and romance. Like I said, I was invested. And Half Black Soul did not disappoint! While the romance between Kayden and Alexa hasn't exactly been slow burning (in fact it's been like a flame and gasoline), it wasn't instalove either. I was impressed by how well Gordon portrayed Alexa's inner struggles, with her feelings for Kayden, her guilt over leaving her sister and her inner monster. I found her monster highly amusing, in a dark humour kind of way, and I'm interested to see how Alexa will keep it on a leash. I don't know if I even want her to! I loved the sweet, romantic scenes between Kayden and Alex and can't wait to see more of them together. Especially now that Alexa has chosen Kayden over Jackson. Not that Jackson knows. Why was she even with him? She continued to call him her best friend even after they were dating and it felt like she forgot she had a boyfriend at times.. A lot of readers criticised Nelly's chapters and would have preferred more Alexa. I am not a fan of alternating POVs but I loved it in this book. It kept me interested and on the edge of my seat, leaving us at tense moments before switching back to the other character. I also really liked Nelly, she has pretty terrifying powers and it was exciting to watch her grow into them and maybe even become a little addicted to them. less
