review 1: I wanted to like this book. And I wanted to find Heather Armstrong exceedingly funny. A couple pages are exceedingly funny, but way too many are a high pitched whine about being totally out of her league in the having a baby department. And I guess the CAPITAL LETTER SCREAMING GOT OLD TOO.And for a page or two reading about Heather's farts, Heather's constipation, and Heather's boobs is mildly entertaining. And then we also get to read about Leta's farts, Leta's poops, but not her boobs... yet, well, not her current boobs, but the theoretical future boobs are discussed. Potty humor on steroids gets boring.I found it sad that just having and raising a baby- one baby- was so monumentally difficult for her but the hyperbole about that was too much.Heather Armstrong will make ... morea great writer when she can take it down a notch, just one notch and include all that great humor and insight in a more maturely developed way.
review 2: Heather is laugh-out-loud funny in an inappropriate slapstick kind of way. That kind of humor isn't usually my thing, but I really liked her book at first because I've birthed two children and can commiserate on the gross indignities of pregnancy and childbirth. The love fest ended though when the humor and the incessant jabs at Mormonism never, ever ended. It was like, "okay I got the opening joke, you can get to the good stuff now," but the good stuff is very infrequent. The serious nugget about postpartum depression and Heather checking herself into a mental facility advertised comes near the end and is of very short duration. The book ended up in the garbage. I wouldn't even sell it back. Since I threw it away, I decided to check out other reviews and found out most of the material from the book is on her blog--for free. At least I only paid the used price at Hastings, but still... less

Classic Dooce - but good for any of my friends having a baby. Unconventional approach to motherhood.

I was able to relate because I have 2 children but something about the organization was off.

Fine. Sometimes funny. Not particularly illuminating, often repetitive.

If I hadn't already read her blog posts I would have enjoyed it more.
