review 1: This is a great book but certainly heavy going. I read it over a 2 week period. Helen Castor is a great writer and I also love watching her documentaries when they air on TV. This book made me realise how in-bred the English monarchy was -cousins marrying cousins down through the line - and how all these "English" queens were really French, German - or from other European provinces. A great read if you are into historical books
review 2: This is an excellent survey of four powerful queens that preceded Mary and Elizabeth Tudor and how their reigns shaped British history. It also delves into how their sex influenced politics of the time while being a lively and engaging read throughout. I read this in segments; the introduction, then a work of fiction; the fi... morerst section (Mathilde), fiction, etc. It took me awhile to finish it this way but gave me time to think and absorb each part. I highly recommend this to any fan of early British history. less
