review 1: I'm teaching out in bush Alaska on the coast (far from where this story takes place) and this little girl reminds me of so many of my students. This is a great book for those back in the lower 48 who want a little glimpse at the kind of world some of the kids up here live in.It is also a great book for kids learning to read between the lines. Written in simple language, it teaches complex thought without necessarily requiring it.It is a coming of age story about a young girl learning who she is and how to function in a world outside of herself.
review 2: This is not only a fabulous story, both in words AND artistically, but I love the fact that the bolded words leave "hidden messages". These bolded words serve as a sort of main idea for the reader - a bigger ... moreclue to the inferential meaning of the novel. Great for low readers, because of its poetry format, but also a fun discussion piece for the "bigger meaning" of the bolded words within each page. less
