review 1: Penguin in Peril is a crazy ride, but for a good portion it is without focus. Despite the name, the story starts from the perspective of three desperate cats who are very hungry. Instead of using the last of their money to buy food, they go to the theater. An idea sprouts from the movie they watch, so they kidnap a penguin to do some fishing for them. From then on, the focus shifts to the penguin, whom we are told is in peril, even though the cats do nothing threatening towards him after the initial kidnapping. He escapes and leads them through a crazy chase, past many black and white wearing citizens, this is most certainly the high point of this book. With the help of a random bird, who somehow knows of the city sewer system, the penguin is able to return home. Two pages... more, with three panels each, show this climactic moment. The art is full of textures and colours, to the point that some of the double-page spreads feel too busy, although this does effectively "hide" the penguin from the cats. While the title presents an interesting idea, sadly there is little behind it. In her attempt to create a silly tale, the author ends up making it unfocused. It is hard to feel worry for the penguin who is never really in peril and is clever enough to escape, while on the other hand, we do feel sorry for the misguided cats who end up in jail just because they were hungry.
review 2: A wily penguin leads three cats on a wild escapade through the city streets as he runs for his life. Although his odds for survival aren't good, especially since they have kidnapped him from the zoo where he lives, he somehow keeps managing to foil those felines. The story and the mixed media illustrations are filled with humor, and there's even a news clipping on the copyright page describing the fate of the cats. less
