When it comes to an 11-piece band, you would be more than forgiven for imagining an amassed mess with no real sound or direction.
However, Portland rockers TYPHOON have collated fourteen eerily progressive tracks splurging with ambience and charm. Delicate, glitchy vocals pierce the instrumentation effervescently ticking away throughout OFFERINGS.
This is their fourth full length and it focuses on the memory loss happening to the fictional protagonist. With glistening melodies soaked in The xx-esque elegance and enigmatic explorations, it is no surprise that singer Kyle Morton revealed he “was watching a lot of David Lynch” during the development of Offerings.
To give just the slightest insight of what to expect from Typhoon this time around, Algernon sounds like a slowed down, deconstructed Alt-J track; piano keys add a somewhat unnerving countdown, almost like the seconds ticking away before the protagonist’s memory dissolves. The jubilance and chaotic avenues ventured down in Unusual is a turning point for the record, the tale and the onward journey for the fictional character.
Offerings is not just an album; it is a story, a mystery, a development and overall an exploration. It could definitely soundtrack a weirdly wonderful Lynch movie, but also as a standalone record holds up as a truly stunning collation.
