review 1: This is an excellent book, and as a debut novel ... extraordinary! It explores the problems of aging, loneliness, inter-cultural relationships, and romance, all the while giving beautiful word pictures of life in the small village of Edgecombe St. Mary (England, of course). There are no objectionable portions. You won't have to hide it from the kids. It's just an uplifting and very good reading experience. I look forward to more by Helen Simonson.
review 2: The author thanks her writing community in the acknowledgments for helping her appreciate the beauty of the sentence. ... moreow difficult he might be. But the reader was allowed to see this human part of him as well, as he struggled against those personality traits that even he found disagreeable. Roger was horrible and Mrs. Ali perfect. I found it took me a bit to really get involved in the story, but by the time I reached the end, I was so emotionally involved, it was sad to see the characters go. less
