review 1: This book is a loosely autobiographical account of an Asian woman trying to make partner in the cut throat world of big New York City law firms. The story takes many of the tried and true turns for a romantic comedy (handsome co-worker love interest, supportive best friend, a couple funny sidekicks, a mean rival receives his comeuppance), so we are not pathbreaking here. That said, there are a few descriptions of big law firm life (the law firm softball league, office politics, last minute weekend assignments for associates), that are spot on and entertaining. All in all, a breezy and easy read, that is fun while it happens, but doesn't leave you with too much after it's done.
review 2: This book made me *mad*. Not because it is badly written -- which it is
... morenot; rather, it's quite the page-turner --- but because it so nimbly rubs raw the sore spot of any professional minority woman working in a predominantly male corporate culture. The awkwardness, the double standards, the half-hearted attempts at diversity inclusion. All is smoke and mirrors and this book does well to remind us that despite Women's Lib, more women graduating from college, etc., this is still a man's world. Thankfully, the female protagonist gets to have the last laugh, but for the rest of us still slogging away and doing our best to deal with the day-to-day hypocrisy and still strive for success, this is a somewhat cathartic fairytale. less

Fast and fun read especially for anyone who's worked at a law firm.

Interesting premise. Some acute observations. Mediocre ending.

While rare, I hate when I read a bad book.....
