review 1: I confess that I didn't finish this book. I read 50 pages... stopped, thought a bit and finally was able to put my finger on why I was not enjoying this book. Generally I like books about the CIA, espionage (what I view as the flip-side of diplomacy) but this book was really unsatisfying. It was not that it wasn't well written, what rankled me was that all of his stories were so vague and lacked vividness. I know that ex-CIA must have their books vetted and approved by the CIA to protect state-secrets and identities of operatives and assets, but the author basically stripped his memoir of any color, detail, richness. Argo, this is not. My Spy, this is not.
review 2: This book was what i had been waiting for. I could never find a book that really talks ab
... moreout the CIA and intelligence in a a realistic way. As Crumpton speaks to you from his own life experiences starting off from his youth, it is much more enjoyable compared to a book on intelligence which just goes on and on about policy, and gives no personal background. Although there are parts in which he does explain different things in that area he does keep the book lively with personal stories, good and bad, through out the book. Through and through the book was very good. I intend to read it again just because there is so much information to soak up. It's a must read if you are interested in leading this type of life. less

An interesting read although just a bit too rah-rah pro-American for my Canadian sensibilities.

Interesting biographical information, far less "intelligence art" than expected.

Meh. Reads like a resume in some places.
