review 1: The first couple of chapters were promising, especially the first on Japanese etiquette. But the rest of the book wasn't nearly as densely packed with helpful tips. His humor and wit kept me reading until almost the end.The title itself, "An Modern Guide to Manners", and the featured reviews "... Guide to gracious living" had me intrigued enough to pick it up and learn some insightful tips, only to be left with more to be wanted. Perhaps it was hasteful judgment on my part. The book is more of the author's personal quest and his musings and opinions on things. I had held on despite the lack of tips because of his interesting style. Eventually I lost interest in reading any more because the overall cons outweighed the sparse pros. His conceitedness was not amusing, and some ... moreof the tips themselves were questionable.
review 2: To be completely accurate, I did not finish reading this book... It is amongst the very few books that I have started reading and just couldn't get myself to finish. Honestly, the book just wasn't want I thought it would be, i thought it would give instruction on the how-to's for formal manners. Instead it was pages and pages of his reflections of other individual's misuses of etiquette. Simply not for me... less

Actually I had to disagree with several of the items he tackled. I must be a rude beast.

Disjointed, but fun. The author shares my affinity for manners books and advice columns.

This book was pretty blah.. Really, there isn't much more to be said than that.

Funny from start to finish, as well as thought-provoking.
