review 1: Okay, this was written by a man, so it doesn't technically fit on this "shelf." It does, however, fit in the genre and is much like in feel as the other books in this collection. Only thing is that wasn't as well done as most of the rest of the books I've categorized it with. It was an experiment. I did download (for free from Amazon) some of this author's other books, I read that his detective novels were fun. Jenkins was a publisher...actually published Wodehouse. Nothing special, but a cute, fun, clean read and FREE on kindle. Patricia got a little wearisome and some of the descriptions were tedious as well. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and would recommend to someone looking for a mildly interesting clean little romance.

... moreree time I used to record audiobooks for LibriVox.org and this is a book someone else recorded that I came across at that time. It seems to be very rare in actual book form but you can get it in eBook form or listen to it for free quite easily. In any case, my husband and I fell in love with the audio version recorded by Anna Simon for LibriVox and it is our go-to listening for car trips. The story takes place in 1918 London where young Patricia Brent lives in a boarding house and works as a secretary for a politician. She is a bit burned out on her life in general when she overhears two gossips who also live in the boarding house discussing her with pity and the fact that she never has young men take her out. At that night's dinner, in a fit of temper, she announces that she will be having dinner with her fiance the following evening. She enjoys the shock of her fellow housemates and plans to simply take herself out to dinner but when three particularly nosy residents follow her out, she finds herself stuck. On a whim and out of fear of discovery, she sits down with a young man dining alone and asks him to please play along with her. What follows is romantic comedy perfection as Patricia and Peter fall quite in love and then must battle against Patricia's pride and embarrassment over the manner of their meeting. A cast of excellent supporting characters rounds out the story and make Patricia's often frustrating stubbornness more bearable. My only complaint with this story is that the author occasionally makes sexist comments in the course of his narration but I suppose his views are typical of his time. If you can put the comments aside, this is such a fun story to read or listen to and I recommend it highly! less

Absolute fluff. A thumb-twiddler. Soooo predictable. Didn't *hate* it, but felt the tedium strongly.
