review 1: a pretty good introductory book about bipolar disorder for teens and young adults. it's not very informative for someone who already has a grasp on things like myself. but ten years ago, this book would have been great. the writing style is very conversational, making it easy to understand and relate to. only reason it really gets 3 stars from me is bc sometimes clinical explanation and advice is needed (within the wit) to give a book about bipolar disorder an authoritative air.
review 2: I really like the writing style of this book. It is a quick, fun read on some serious topics. The author does a great job of finding positives across all areas of the disorder, while not denying that Bipolar is one of the more serious mental illnesses. The reading is quick, ye
... moret informative and all young people with Bipolar should read this to understand much of the medical diagnostic side. Like the author says, I am here to make you feel more like a human and less of a statistic. However, the way she shows the statistics and explains serious symptoms of Bipolar as part of the disease (including suicide ideation and risk behaviors) does allow the reader to understand how the Bipolar Brain functions vastly different than a "depressed or anxious brain" Bipolar is a disorder in the brain, and there are many ways to help the individual. While I personally found short term medication and long term dynamic counseling to work for me, the book talks about how certain therapies might not work for the individual because it depends on what they want to get out of treatment, or if self management is effective for them. The truth it, Bipolar is chronic, it will never go away completely, but we do have the power to reduce the severity of episodes if we provide ourselves the support we need. The humor did help make the serious situations more personal as well! Well done, Hilary Smith. I don't give books 5 stars often, and even though I disagree with some of her points, the majority of it sums up my views. So, a well deserved 5 stars for Welcome to the Jungle! less

Ok. Definitely an introductory book aimed at people in their teens. Rather ... perky.
