review 1: I didn't know what the author was talking about half the time, and this was more gay than I require, but I still found it intermittently fascinating. It's a collection of essays grouped around the theme of white girls, which, via talking out your ass, can include seemingly anything and everything. And so you get essays on Eminem, Richard Pryor, Malcolm X, Truman Capote and Virginia Wooolf, an actual white chick, plus a lengthy discussion of the author's various personal relationships -- the book's centerpiece, but probably not interesting enough to anyone other than the author and maybe a few other people to warrant its own separate publication or even being prominently touted in any of the book's marketing materials, as far as I can tell. Not that this guy isn't way smart... moreer than I am, but this definitely has me reconsidering the prospects of someone cutting me a check to write a book.
review 2: Many writers resist breaking too many conventions in their creative non fiction. Als is not one of them. He is truly a master of prose and his brilliant cultural criticism will have you reconsidering all you thought you ever knew about race, gender and sexuality in America. If you're looking for a book to make you think about complex topics from a new perspective and blow you away with the writing-this is the one. less
