My Thoughts
I’m always fascinated by what some people will do to prepare for the inevitable apocalypse. I’m firmly in the camp of ‘hope it never happens in my lifetime’ so I don’t really understand the mentality of the people who have bunkers and such like. So this novel intrigued me when I read the synopsis. Rich families buying luxury apartments under ground for when the end of the world comes.
Formed of different perspectives, mostly from the younger inhabitants of the bunker, we learn that things aren’t quite as they appeared to be in the brochure – who’d have thought? But when people start dying and families turn on each other, they have to decide if they want to take their chances on the outside… if they even can.
So many little things made this book a great read for me. The endless tension of being trapped under ground. The mysterious deaths and everyone trying to figure out who is responsible. Not to mention all the other things that start to go wrong meaning that they’re trapped whether they like it or not.
There were several characters I didn’t like and there were several that I did. The twist at the end was one that I did not see coming – I actually felt like a fool for having not figured it out. I did feel that it was a little drawn out. I found myself getting bored in places throughout. There wasn’t any one point of view that I didn’t enjoy reading but the course of events was just a little dull for me at times.
While I enjoyed this read, I can see why it wouldn’t be for everyone. If you pick it up, I’d recommend reading at least one chapter from each point of view before deciding whether or not to put it down.
