review 1: A couple du jour romance series with undersea folk and mythology that takes place on both land and sea. Kyros, a Dagonian and best friend to Xanthus from the first book, has a really good reason to hate humans and shares his species’ prejudice of mermaids. The problem is that Xanthus is married to Sara who is half human/half mermaid and he’s asking for help guarding her on land while Xanthus follows through on his personal mission to prevent a war the humans don’t know is coming.Gretchen is Sara’s best friend and she’s got her own secret about what she is. When she comes to stay with Sara, Kyros is appalled by her manner and words. Their women never argue or express an opinion or disobey an order! But she grows on him, especially when it becomes apparent th... moreat her life is in danger, and by whom. Good romance and some more world-building as we learn more about both Dagonians and the Mer folk. Action and humor along with a couple of intense scenes, I found this to be an enjoyable book to read. And it becomes obvious that there is somewhat of a back story going on and that there will be at least one more book, if not more involving characters we've come to know in these first two books. But don't start with this book. You'll enjoy this a lot more if you read Rising first.
review 2: "Descending" is the second book in a contemporary paranormal series by Holly Kelly. If anything, this book is even better than the first, "Rising". A new hero and heroine take center stage, having been introduced in the first book. The series is about an ocean-living race called Dagonians, who are similar to familiar mermaids and mermen, but because of ancient history the Dagonians are not allies with the decimated mer group. This tale has an ubervillainess who wants the heroine dead. The plot is fast-paced, energetic, and has quite a body count, although all the carnage takes place 'offstage'. While the ocean is a character in this book, just as in the first book, I do wish we could have learned a bit more about the daily life of the Dagonians in their underwater world. But as the swift-moving plot mostly takes place on coastal land with more familiar markers for the reader, this quibble is minor. I liked these main characters, and the couple from the first book are a strong part of this plot also, making continuity easy. There is some foreshadowing that hints of greater challenges and problems to come for the central characters. More will obviously come in later books in the series. I will be reading the third book when it is published. This series is part of New Teen Publications, and has very mild language and no graphic sexual situations. less
