review 1: Horace Greasely waited a lifetime before telling his story.....and what a truly great story it is. A young man and woman took a daring chance ......an act of defiance to seize life in the midst of death from that daring moment an energy was born that eventually enabled both of them to give real hope to POWs who were fast losing all hope. Amazingly they were able to bring tangible gifts too,,, much needed food and incredibly even more a wireless built in the prison from many parts carefully and secretly smuggled in bringing the so vital news from the free world. Horace Greasley began his daring exploits with more thought of satisfying his own needs than that of his fellow prisoners. After all he was a virile young man being driven slowly crazy by the inhuman imprisonment. ... moreBut he seized this opportunity and together with his secret lover found a way to share this joie de vivre with his fellow prisoners. It is probably almost impossible for those of us who have never suffered imprisonment and war to imagine how great a gift this was. What a great film this story would make.
review 2: I picked this book up to see if it would be my next read and in reading the Foreword came across these statements. '.....these are the words of Howard Greasley,........Horace could not write or type because of severe arthritis. I take no credit for this book; I have merely acted as his fingers.' and 'at times reliving the brutality........ would bring him to tears. I followed suit closely;........' I knew then that this book would be wriien with respect, with admirations but most of all with compassion. Before I even start I am hooked! Now that I have read this book.....wow! This did NOT live up to expectation. The best part of the book was the foreword! What went wrong.........The prologue, in my opinion, had the Ghost Writer assuming knowledge he didn't have and assuming thoughts and actions of Russian Soldiers. Yes we all know that they behaved really badly but this was Mr Scott using 'poetic licence'  and in doing so did not add to what was the supposed biography of Horace Greasley. Next problem and now we are on the page 2  of the 'biography' and I quote.......'Horace, his twin brother Harold, older sister Daisy, young sister Sybil and baby Derick'  let us now jump ahead to page 4 'On Horace's 14th birthday - Christmas Day 1932 - his father presented him with his first gun............. Harold got a couple of books............ And Sybil the oldest sister, got nothing'. In the space of two pages Mr Scott has forgotten who is the older sister.....not a good start and how did the proof reader miss this! This book is not about a hero, nor someone who should be admired, respected or have a book written about them. This is about the supposed sexual activities of a truly debauched person and lauded by a ghost writer. A man who we are expected to believe  had been beaten and almost starved to death and yet managed to have a very physical relationship. The book goes on to tell us that activities such as these had ''dulled' owing to poor diet! Yet only Horace was spared this 'dulling'! We are told how for weeks he had observed the guards and the changes to their shift patterns to enable him to have his liaisons in the nearby woods. Yet when the time came he had to be helped out the window by others...... How on earth did he manage during his time observing the guards. Really! This is not a book about a hero, it is not even a book about a gentleman because a gentleman keeps his mouth shut. It is about a man who has no respect for women and in my opinion had fantasies and maybe it was his fantasies that kept him alive and Mr Scott  has indulged him. Men who boast about conquests seldom have any. The blurb on the cover states 'the incredible story' and that sums it all up. It is incredible! The word meaning unbelievable and that is what it is. If I could I would give this book minus stars! Definitely not worth reading!  less
