review 1: Talbott, H. (2012). It's all about me-ow: A young cat's guide to the good life. New York: Nancy Paulsen Books.Picture BookThis book is told from the perspective of an older cat who is teaching a young cat how to live among humans. While it is funny and clever, it also provides some actual “cat facts” about the parts of a cat’s body, cats through history, and other animals in the “cat family.” It includes some humorous charts outlining the differences between cats and humans - a cat nose is labeled “cute and powerful” while a human nose is labeled “big but feeble.” The cat narrator also tells the newbie the value of “purr therapy” for the modern family. To quote the narrator, “We don’t do tricks, we don’t come when we’re called, we eat and slee... morep when we want to...and yet, they love us for it! Why? It’s a little something I call catitude.” I think kids would love the humor and attitude of this book - and the chance to see the world from a cat’s perspective. The illustrations add a lot to the story, showing us how a cat zips around a room and sits in the weirdest places. The reader will also learn more about real life cats - the section about cat history was especially interesting. As someone who is not a general fan of cats, this book made even me appreciate their “catitude.”Question: After viewing the pages where different members of the cat family are pictured, including the Kentucky Wildcat at the Lynx, I would ask the kids to come up with a list of what these animals all have in common - what makes them part of the same animal family. You could then come up with a list of what is different about these animals. This would be a great chance to use some nonfiction books to bolster the conversation and provide research materials.
review 2: This picture book reads like a how-to manual from an experienced house-cat to the new kittens in the family. It's a very funny, cat-centric view of home life. It can be summed up with this quote from the book, "We don't do tricks, we don't come when we're called, we eat and sleep when we want to...and yet, they love us for it! Why? It's a little something I call...CATITUDE." Cat lovers will especially love this book! This is a YHBA 2014-2015 picture book nominee. It's certainly not the strongest entry on the list, but it's enjoyable. less
