review 1: I was initially a little put off by jarring attempts to make the mid-twenties protagonist sound up to date. The reference to "Tinchy featuring Tinie" felt particularly forced. I'm not sure this was necessary, frankly. But once I'd moved past that, this swiftly became a very enjoyable read: the flashbacks outlining the past were nicely handled, the descriptions of Ellie were wonderful (I think I'm a little in love with her myself), and the climax was brilliant. I particularly enjoyed Ferg, who has some fantastic lines.
review 2: It's lovely to read another of Banks' young-man-returns-to-Scottish-scene-of-crime novels, but just as Steep Approach to Garbadale was a lighter, less involving variation on The Crow Road, so this charming book softens up even further. I
... moret's too stretched out, padded even, and the central plot and love affair isn't constructed anywhere near strong enough to make it seem fully worth the effort. His prose and characterisation though, are like a familiar warm bath of happiness. less
