review 1: Well. Up until the last few pages, I was planning on giving this book two stars. I didn't find it that enjoyable, or particularly well written but I could see why people would enjoy it. And then I read the final few pages. Without giving too much away, the ending seriously grossed me out. And I also thought that there were way too many coincidences to be even remotely believable. Definitely not a book I would recommend.
review 2: "Money is merely another term for people, a representation of their desires and personalities. If you do not understand one, you cannot hope to understand the one. Take the matter of giving inducement to win a contract. This is frowned on, called bribery, and in some cases is even considered criminal. But it is an area in which rationa
... morel calculation and emotional empathy are the most perfectly fused. It is an art form: a Russian expects and envelope full of money; an English civil servant would be outraged at the idea, but is no less corrupt or greedy. He desires employment for his nephew--which is often a more generous gift. It is diplomacy carried over to the world of affairs, and both require delicacy and judgement." less

Sadly, I couldn't even finish this book. Historical fiction is not typically a genre I enjoy, but I've read a few lately that have given me hope. This book did not and for a simple reason - it is much too long. The unimportant details bored me to tears, and while I believe those were put in as a way to hide the true clues, a more direct thriller would have been much more enjoyable. I read a spoiler of the ending, and perhaps if I read through to the end I'd have more of a positive feeling about it. But since I did not, it comes off as cheap. I'm sad I didn't enjoy this book more.

Well done. Like the "Instance of the Fingerpost" it is told in sections, each section by a different narrator (and in this case, a different timeframe), so by the end we have quite a different picture of events than in the beginning. Quite a sweep of story and history and geography (London, Paris, Venice). I enjoyed it very mucjh, even though it took me a while to read. (He's such a good writer that I didn't want to skim over anything!)

Lots of twists and turns...thought it could have been a touch shorter but a definite recommend
