review 1: This was a tough book to read. Some of the writing was beautiful, but the narrative wound between fantasy and reality so often that the story became muddled. The imagery became overwhelming for me and I felt like I was trapped inside someone's dream. Drifting from one place to another, I got lost. However, I realize that not everyone will feel this way. If you are a fan of poetry, this book is a great read. Perhaps that's how I should have looked at it...one giant poem.
review 2: The second novel for Ilie Ruby, THE SALT GOD'S DAUGHTER, is my first of hers to read. This woman can write, hands down. Each sentence is carfully crafted, drawing to mind the image of living in a dream, the fluidity of living in surreal landscape, which is probably exactly what Ruby wa
... morented to evoke. The strong undercurrent of the ocean weighs in with a dark, heavy gray-green wash. Our minds and bodies are transported to the sea (Pacific), which serves as a backdrop for most of the novel; in fact, I could almost taste the salt on my lips. However, if you're not into the ocean--literally or metaphorically, the book will grow old quickly. Much of this story is rooted in symbolism--including the vastness of the ocean, the questions and wonderings of growing up, the mystical escape of a father, mother, and more. One can't have the ocean without the pull of the tides...and that of the moon. Again, much of the book returns back to the earthly elements of the moon and ocean, which I found somewhat intersting, but by the end of the book, was growing tired of.While many passages stand out at me, I find myself wondering exactly what the book is about--bonds of sisters, mothers, daughters...yes. But there is little dialogue, action, and while expertly written, the story substance lacks--at least for me. less

I liked the beginning of the book and the protagonist. But I thought some of it was too strange.
