review 1: The rhythm of the writing in the prologue inspired ideas for 3 poems, and I anticipated more as I moved into the novel, but Ms. Ruby's gifts as a painter and a short story writer could not be sustained over the length of a novel. Much of the narrative is re-worked phrases, and while one cares about the characters(because there is a tragedy to be resolved and a mystery to be solved) the "scenes" in the novel jump too quickly to give one time to become engaged. The title is going on my "beach-read" shelf because I can see the YA women in my family passing it around.
review 2: 2.5 stars. I'm disappointed. I wanted to like this book, but characterization was lacking. I couldn't care about the characters. The often contradicting logic was distracting, and some of th
... moree dialogue absolutely pointless, seeming contrived for drama. Too forced. The potential for a great story was there, obvious research and interesting facts presented, but the author missed the mark in her storytelling and character building. less

Would have been a good book if the last chapter wasn't so awful.
